2014 Edition EHR Frequently Asked Questions

The Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) officially retired all 2014 edition certification listings.

  • The Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) officially retired all 2014 edition certification listings on June 30, 2020, and updated the ONC CHPL website. These certification listings are still accessible for historical purposes but will indicate their status as “Retired.”

  • The ONC planned to retire the 2014 edition since the inception of the 2015 edition certification program back in 2017.  CMS has also stated that 2014 edition certified technology may not be used for attestation but requires 2015 edition certified technology by providers (EP/EC) and eligible hospitals (EH/CAH) beginning with CY 2019 reporting period. Developers who currently only hold a 2014 edition certification and not a 2015 edition certification will no longer have an active certification under the ONC Health IT Certification Program effective June 30, 2020.

  • Developers will need to remove any reference to ONC 2014 Edition Certification from their website and marketing materials by June 30, 2020.  It is also important that developers communicate the removal of their 2014 edition certification to any of their affected clients. To continue in the ONC Health IT Certification Program, please contact Drummond to learn about 2015 edition testing and certification.

  • To register for 2015 edition testing and certification, please complete the online registration form via our Drummond website here. For questions pertaining to 2015 edition testing criteria, please email us at certification@drummondgroup.com.

  • For products never certified to the ONC 2015 Edition, developers may test and certify to the existing 2015 edition and can opt to certify to many of the 21st Century Cures updates within 24 months. For a full overview of the Cures updates, please see our Drummond webinar and ONC Final Rule page.

  • Software testing and certification enhances product reliability in the market. Our testing process helps to mitigate any defects before the production release. Additional programs external to CMS also require ONC certification.  For a current list of these programs, see the ONC page here.
