ONC Compliance Learning Series

ONC Health IT Compliance Training

Build ONC Health IT certification process knowledge before your first test with this expert-led learning series.

From Requirements Confusion to Testing Confidence

Approaching ONC certification for the first time can feel overwhelming. The certification program has specific requirements, testing procedures, and ongoing compliance obligations that development teams must understand before entering the formal testing process.

The ONC Compliance Learning Series fills a critical knowledge gap for health IT developers who build capable products but lack familiarity with ONC certification requirements, processes, and expectations. Delivered by Drummond’s ONC-Authorized Test Lab (ONC-ATL), this three-month private engagement equips development teams with foundational knowledge before testing begins.

Common Challenges for First-Time ONC Health IT Certification Participants

Health IT developers entering the ONC Certification Program often face a steep learning curve. Technical teams understand how to build software, but certification requirements introduce an entirely different set of expectations around standards conformance, test procedures, and ongoing compliance obligations.

This Program May Be Right for Your Team If:

  • Your development team is preparing for its first ONC certification and lacks familiarity with certification criteria.
  • You’ve registered with ASTP but aren’t sure what happens next or how to prepare.
  • Recent team turnover means new staff need to understand certification program expectations
  • You’re building FHIR-based interoperability solutions and want targeted guidance on FHIR implementation requirements
  • You want to reduce the risk of delays or failed tests caused by knowledge gaps
Healthcare customers or RFPs require ONC-certified products, and your team is starting from scratch

Without proper preparation, development teams may discover gaps during testing, leading to delays, failed test attempts, and costly rework. The ONC Compliance Learning Series helps teams identify and address knowledge gaps before the formal testing process begins.

Why Drummond for ONC Certification Education

Drummond has certified over 3,500 ONC Health IT products—more than all other ONC-ACBs combined.

Active ONC-ATL Expertise

Sessions are led by professionals who conduct ONC certification testing daily—not third-party trainers. Instructors bring real-world experience with common pitfalls, success factors, and the nuances of test procedures that only come from hands-on testing work.

Dedicated Support

The program includes a session with Drummond’s ONC-ACB covering post-certification obligations. Participants learn about Real World Testing requirements, Conditions and Maintenance of Certification, and ongoing compliance expectations before they start the certification process.

Structured AND Flexible

The curriculum follows a defined structure but adapts based on an initial GAP Analysis and your development stage. Topics are selected to match your product architecture and certification pathway needs.

Seamless Transition

Upon program completion, participants are assigned a dedicated ONC-ATL Proctor/Account Manager and can schedule testing with confidence.

How It Works

Step 1
Initial Assessment

A Drummond representative meets with your team to understand your goals, current development status, and knowledge gaps. This assessment informs topic selection and session customization.

Step 2
Track Selection

Choose between the General ONC Compliance Learning Series covering broad certification topics, or the FHIR-specific track with deeper focus on FHIR implementation guides, requirements, and test tools.

Step 3
Schedule Sessions

Over three months, your team participates in six bi-weekly educational sessions covering health IT standards, ONC Test Procedures and Compliance Guides, ONC Test Tools, and technical deep-dives tailored to your needs.

Step 4
GAP Analysis & Pre-Assessment

Drummond conducts a GAP Analysis to identify remaining readiness gaps and delivers a Pre-Assessment Technical Review session that simulates actual testing conditions.

Step 5
ACB Session

Meeting with Drummond’s ONC-Authorized Certification Body (ONC-ACB) will prepare your team for post-certification obligations, including Real World Testing as well as Conditions and Maintenance of Certification requirements.

Step 6
Transition

Upon completion, participants receive a dedicated Drummond ONC-ATL Proctor/Account Manager assignment and can schedule formal testing with confidence.

FAQs

The program serves health IT developers seeking ONC certification for the first time, including EHR vendors, health information exchange developers, clinical decision support companies, patient engagement platform providers, and healthcare interoperability solution developers. Existing certified clients with recent team turnover can also enroll new staff members to bring them up to speed on certification program expectations.

No. The ONC Compliance Learning Series is an educational program, not a consulting or advisory engagement. Sessions focus on what developers need to know about ONC certification rather than providing guidance on how to build or architect health IT software products. The program prepares teams for testing but does not include active participation in development work.

The ONC Compliance Learning Series spans three months and includes six bi-weekly educational sessions, plus a GAP Analysis, Pre-Assessment Technical Review, and a one-hour session with Drummond’s ONC-Authorized Certification Body.

No. Participation in the ONC Compliance Learning Series helps improve readiness and reduces common missteps, but the separate ONC certification process outcomes depend on the product meeting all applicable requirements. The program is designed to help prepare development teams for testing—not to replace or shortcut the certification process itself.
