CMS requires Payers to use FHIR® APIs for electronic Prior Authorization (ePA). If your systems can’t connect with real partners, you won’t be compliant. FHIRplace provides impacted parties the change to confirm readiness, identify issues early, and gain confident before deployment and compliance deadlines.
Unlike self-directed testing or connectathons with limited effect, FHIRplace supports interoperability by empowering participants to test their implementations against each other’s implementation in a real-world like environment. And Drummond manages the process for them end-to-end, including:
- Partner matching and coordination,
- Purpose build test cases aligned with HL7 Da Vinci ePA requirements, and
- Multi-party scenarios that reflect the complexities of product use.
FHIRplace helps participants uncover interoperability gaps that other test methods often miss.
Who Should Participate
The ePA test event is open to healthcare providers, payers, intermediaries, and health IT developers who have or will have significant existing prior authorization implementations and have invested in self-testing using conformance testing tools, participated in one or more HL7 Connectathons, or engaged in one or more interoperability projects with partners.
Participants must be committed to testing with other implementers and collaboratively working together with other test participants to resolve uncovered interoperability issues, fix your code, and retest to confirm issue resolution.

Anticipated Commitment
FHIRplace test events are virtual. Participants should plan to dedicate 2-3 hours per week for meetings, with additional time for setup, testing, and feedback sessions adjusted based on individual solution requirements. Participants who want to experience the benefits of the test automation capabilities of the FHIRplace platform, must develop FHIRplace client integration.
What to Expect
Over several coordinated cycles , participants will:
- Integrate the lightweight FHIRplace client once to unlock automated test execution and reporting for this and future events.
- Commit about two to three hours per week for collaborative sessions over six to eight weeks.
- Log, triage, and resolve interoperability issues week over week, adding real‑world feedback that shapes future Da Vinci IGs and FHIRplace test scenarios.
- Establish secure connections and exchange CRD, DTR, and PAS transactions with multiple real partners.
